The Fiat 1300/1500 series built from 1961 until 1968 featured plain, three-box styling by Pininfarina and was a well designed and thought out saloon that has largely been forgotten due to the rust curse. With a willing four-cylinder engine developing 72bhp in 1500 form and with a four-speed all-synchromesh column-shift gear change, the Fiat was a lively performer and would top 150km/h.
A stylish variant was the Cabriolet while the sedan proved popular in service from the police to taxis. Although a rare sight on Australian roads, the Fiat sold well in Europe and approximately 600,000 were built all told but is forgotten by all but the most ardent Italian car enthusiasts today - a great pity as these are worthy cars with a lot more brio than their English or American counterparts.
