Often cited as the greatest Aussie muscle car of all time, the XY Falcon GT was an evolution of the previous XW model when launched in November 1970. Retaining the 351-cid V8 but with a bigger Autolite 600cfm four-barrel downdraft carby and 11.0:1 compression ratio to boost power output to 300bhp, the thundering GT now came with a choice of three diff ratios and four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmissions.
Externally, the XY retained the matt black bonnet panels, grille and rear panel and Super Roo decals but a new functional bonnet scoop known as 'The Shaker' was introduced. Braking was improved with larger Kelsey Hayes discs up front, the wheels were a new five-slot design that was said to be stronger and the GT could be ordered with an optional 36-gallon fuel tank.
The XY GT is regarded as the ultimate development of the series begun some years earlier with the XR and is still a fantastically capable road burner today. In 1971 Alan Moffat and the Falcon GT dominated Bathurst and Fords filled all but one of the top six places that year. Built for only two years, the GT was made in limited numbers (757 in 1970 and 800 in 1971 plus 300 Phase IIIs) and are today amongst the most collectible Australian cars ever made, with prices for genuine GTs having shown unprecedented appreciation in recent years.
