The HK represented a new generation for Holden when launched in 1968, being longer, wider and more roomy than its predecessors and came with the option of V8 power for the first time. In July 1968, the range was expanded to include a new two-door coupe known as the Monaro - a name that has become legend in the annals of Australian motoring history - and the Monaro GTS went on to score a maiden victory at Bathurst later that year, taking the first three places on its first attempt. The Chevrolet-sourced V8s were available as either a 307-cid (5-litre) or the four-barrel 327-cid (5.3-litre) with a Rochester four-barrel carburettor and 8.75:1 compression ratio.
Developing 250bhp at 4800rpm, power was delivered via the Saginaw four-speed manual gearbox with standard 3.36:1 ratio and a Positraction 10-bolt limited-slip diff. Other modifications included torque rods on the back axle, different shock absorbers, a bigger stabilizer bar and D7014 Redwall tyres on unique rims. Braking for the 327 was always its Achilles Heel, the front discs and rear drums struggling to reign in the speeds the new Monaro was capable of achieving down Conrod Straight. Inside, the GTS Monaros boasted full instrumentation, with a console-mounted tacho and wood rim sports steering wheel and were distinguished externally with stripes and badging. Holden's advertising boasted the new Monaro was ?Out to drive you wild? and as the first in a long line of Aussie muscle cars, the GTS 327 is now highly prized by collectors.
