Holden?s HQ was big news when launched in July 1971, with advanced styling, coil sprung suspension all round for the first time and Salisbury-type back axles for V8 models. The Monaro sports coupe was again offered, in GTS, GTS 350 or LS trim and 'from March 1973' a four-door version of the Monaro was offered to buyers for the first time. The GTS was the performance-oriented package, offering the 253-cid V8 as standard with either four-speed or Trimatic transmissions.
Those seeking more go could choose the 308-cid V8 with four-barrel Rochester carburettor and 9.0:1 compression ratio cranking out 240bhp at 4800rpm. The GTS had full instrumentation (including tacho), a gunmetal finish dashboard and bucket seats while the exterior boasted blacked-out grille and headlamp surrounds, triple vents behind the front wheel arches and unique sports wheel trims. The HQ Monaro GTS certainly looked the business and Holden?s advertising pitch summed it all up with the line, 'Where's all the action Right here'.
