1956 Dodge Kingsway Coronet Sedan

Chrysler was represented in Australia during the immediate post-war period by the Plymouth Cranbrook, DeSoto Diplomat and Dodge Kingsway and, by the early 1950s, was offering cars with locally assembled bodies. All three models were powered by the flathead six-cylinder engine sourced from Chrysler in Canada and rode on a 114-inch wheelbase. Styling for the Dodge Kingsway from 1953 was essentially the same as the Plymouths of the same year, with uniquely Australian grilles, while the wings were updated in line with American styling trends in 1955-56.

The range for 1956 consisted of three Kingsway models - the Custom D49/2, the Crusader D49/3 and the Coronet D49/4 ? with the more powerful version available with the optional PowerFlite fully automatic transmission. Dodge in America was riding the crest of a performance wave in the mid-1950s, the introduction of the fire-breathing V8 with hemispherical combustion chambers heralding one of the more dramatic chapters in Mopar history and Dodge managed to win no less than eleven NASCAR races in 1956.
