The transition from raw sports car to luxurious grand tourer, begun with the E-Types in the 1960s, was completed with the launch of the new XJ-S model in 1975. After a slow start due to the fuel crisis, the XJ-S increased in popularity and ultimately continued in production for more than two decades and - as a high performance, supremely refined GT - it stands alone from the era.
Powered by the magnificent 5.3-litre alloy V12, with fuel injection and 285bhp on tap for effortless performance, the XJ-S was mostly sold with automatic transmission (the Borg Warner unit giving way to the GM400 ?box in 1977). Inside, the XJ-S continued the finest traditions of British craftsmanship and the cabin was swathed in rich timbers and hides, with every luxury appointment, and remains a supremely comfortable place to find oneself.
In 1982, the XJS-HE model was introduced with a new dashboard and walnut door cappings, better seats, distinctive five-spoke alloy wheels and central locking. The HE also boasted new 'Fireball' cylinder heads for better fuel efficiency. By the time the HE came along, Jaguar's build quality issues were largely sorted and it is fair to say that prices of the XJ-S have probably reached the limits of the depreciation curve, making sound examples like this car a good investment.
