The glamorous Mercedes-Benz 190 SL represents the very epitome of Fifties automotive chic. The 190 SL was designed to compete with the likes of the Austin Healey in the lucrative American market and its appeal was built around the curvaceous styling that bore more than a passing resemblance to its big brother, the exotic 300 SL, and the rather more affordable price.
Launched at the 1954 New York Motor Show, the 190 SL utilised running gear derived from the saloon car range and was powered by a 1897cc four-cylinder engine with overhead camshafts (a first for Daimler Benz) and twin Solex carburettors. Developing 120bhp and driving through a four-speed manual gearbox, the 190 SL handled well thanks to the unitary construction technique that was another first for the Stuttgart Company.
The stylish exterior was complemented by a typically Fifties high quality interior, with painted dash, leather padding and large diameter steering wheel along with the option of a hardtop. The sales figures indicate the 190 SL was a huge success, with 25,881 built between 1955 and 1963 and they make an immensely satisfying classic convertible to own and drive today.
