Porsche joined the supercar ranks for the first time with the 911 Turbo, first displayed in concept car form at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973.
The model entered production powered by a 3.0 litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine in 1974, offering spectacular performance and adding 'turbo' to the motoring lexicon for enthusiasts. For 1978, the 911 Turbo was substantially revised with an enlarged and intercooled 3.3 litre engine with its power raised from 260 to 300HP, while the much larger and more powerful drilled and slotted disc brakes form Porsche's 917 Can Am race car overcame the original Turbo's stopping problems from high speed. Turbo 3.3 models were also distinguished by their more deeply dished trademark 'whale tail', while interior trim and equipment was more luxurious, befitting the top-of-the-range 911 model.
