Replacing the Mazda RX3, the original RX7 coupe introduced in 1978 was immediately a hit. With excellent performance delivered by its front mounted Wankel rotary engine, combined with good handling and a sleek coupe body, it soon became a serious challenger to the larger and less nimble Nissan 260Z/280Z models.
Racing driver Allan Moffat campaigned a series of RX7 models in the Australian Touring Car Championship, famously heading the Holdens and Falcons to win the National title in 1983. The Series II RX7 models made from 1981-83 featured new wrap-around tail lights, prominent waistline protective strips, new wheels, four wheel disc brakes and an uprated engine.
