A big factor in BMW's renaissance in the 1960s was the stylish, Karmann-built pillarless coupe originally launched as a 2-litre with rather ungainly frontal appearance, but it was the launch of the first six-cylinder model.
The 2800CS, in1968 saw the now definitive shape - with four round headlamps. This was supplanted by the 3.0CS in 1971 with a bigger, more powerful engine, the choice of two new gearboxes (a Getrag four-speed manual or Borg-Warner automatic) and disc brakes all round. The final revision came in April 1974 with six-inch cast alloy wheels and an adjustable steering column the most significant news. Other than the homologation specials like the CSL, the pick of the CS family is the Bosch D-Jetronic injected 3.0 model - with 200bhp on tap, these could hit 140mph and took just 7.5 seconds to reach 100km/h, performance figures that put the BMW firmly in Italian exotica territory. Inside, the CS was expensively finished with electric windows, full instrumentation, wood trim and the choice of cloth or leather upholstery. In total just 8,199 CSi coupes were built before the model gave way to the new 6-Series in November 1975 and enthusiasts are now rightfully seeking out these earlier cars for their special blend of exceptional performance, elegant styling and quality engineering.
