During the 1980s, Maserati began to focus on building small, high performance coupes with high levels of equipment and luxury to compete with the likes of BMW and developed the Biturbo to this end.
Unveiled to the press in December 1981, the Biturbo's 90-degree V6 engine boasted twin turbochargers at a time when this method of increasing power was something of a novelty and this boosted output to a healthy 180bhp in early 2-litre form (later 2.5-litre cars managed 200bhp). Early on the Biturbo was only available as an elegant but restrained coupe with styling by Giugiaro's Ital Design but the range was subsequently expanded to include both a four-door sedan and convertible.
The latter was restyled and made by Zagato on a wheelbase shortened by some four inches, with a lovely suede-lined hood that was unusually effective in both fit and finish. There is just one word for the Biturbo's interior - sumptuous. From the soft leathers to the elegant analogue clock the ambience of the cockpit is in stark contrast to the more clinical interiors found in its German rivals. The Biturbo Spyder is a quick, stylish and affordable Latin supercar that will, given proper maintenance, provide years of reliable and immensely pleasurable driving.
