The Cortina Series I GT was a high performance model rushed into production by Ford Australia in April 1963 to qualify the model for entry into Australia's major production car endurance race, the Armstrong 500 at Phillip Island.
It was instantly successful, with Bob Jane and Harry Firth winning outright in 1963 and Jane teaming with George Reynolds to win the 1964 race in a later-model GT. It its production form, the Cortina GT was available in two and four-door form and featured basically the same mechanicals as the Cosworth-developed 1.5 litre four cylinder originally fitted in Britain to the Capri GT.
It featured a 9.0:1 compression ratio, a dual choke Weber carburetor, a 'bunch of bananas' exhaust system and produced a healthy 83.5HP at 5,200rpm.
