The Ford Mustang began life as a clever marketing concept to attract younger baby boomer owners to Ford, but it exceeded even Ford's expectations when it appeared in the metal on April 17, 1964.
One Chicago dealer locked his showroom doors for fear that people would be crushed in the melee; another hoisted his new car above the crowd to avoid it being crushed by admirers, while a Texas dealer held an impromptu auction of his lone Mustang and sold it to the highest bidder of 15 eager customers.
The new owner then slept in the car overnight while his cheque cleared to ensure it wasn't sold in his absence! An incredible 418,812 Mustangs galloped out of Ford showrooms in the first 12 months. The Mustang was launched in both coupe and convertible body styles and there is a healthy representation of both in Australia. 1967 saw a significant restyle of the Ford Mustang. Changes included bulkier sheet metal below the beltline, a more aggressive grille and a concave tail panel.
