Released in January 1962, the Chrysler Valiant was a stylish newcomer on the Australian market that seemed a very real advance on the then current EK Holden, offering great looks, more equipment and significantly better performance at a price only slightly above that of the GM-H product. Pitched as an altogether more upmarket alternative, the Valiant's styling was particularly striking, with plenty of curves, slanted rear wings and the signature spare wheel cover in the bootlid. Contemporary press reports found the new Valiant well suited to Australian driving conditions and its success gave Chrysler a great foundation to build on in years to come. Powered by the 225-cid slant six making 145bhp - with either a three-speed manual or TorqueFlite automatic transmissions - the Valiant was justifiably famous for its performance, well ahead of contemporary Holdens or Fords. In total just 1,008 were built before the model was revised to become the S Series, making the R Series Valiant a rare find today.
