Although it may have looked similar to the outgoing E12 5-Series, in reality the second-generation E28 was an entirely new and significantly improved mid-sized sports saloon. Improved suspension front and rear made the new 5-Series better to drive while the range of six-cylinder engines was reworked with updated fuel injection and the range-topping 528i had 184bhp on tap to give a top speed of 210km/h along with sparkling acceleration. Improved build quality was another key area of improvement, as was the interior with a beautifully designed cockpit that set new standards in ergonomics and comfort. The BMW 5-Series was a driver's car first and foremost and even enjoyed a successful race career, a Group A 528i winning the European Touring Car title in 1982 with Helmut Kelleners at the wheel.
