Put simply, the Mustang is an automotive legend. From relatively humble beginnings, the Mustang became the hottest car on the planet when Ford's designers, headed by Lee Iacocca, repackaged the compact Falcon into a personal sports coupe mid-way through the 1964 model year. The classic Mustang shape remained largely unchanged for 1966 (the final year it was left alone) with the floating pony emblem in the grille the most identifiable alteration. Otherwise new chrome side spears and a revised instrument binnacle about summed up the changes for 1966 apart from the longer list of options to allow the Mustang buyer to personalise his or her car to the utmost. The choice of engines was again the base six-cylinder unit or the optional classic small-block 289-cid V8 in three basic levels of tune, known to aficionados as 'A', 'C' or 'K' codes. Three body styles - coupe, convertible or fastback - were offered and the convertible version accounted for a little over ten per cent of total production in 1966, making them a rare and desirable model today.
