Description
Announced for the 1965 model year, the Electra-Glide was big news for Harley-Davidson with an electric start and 12-volt electrics modernising the FL/FLH range. For 1966, the Electra-Glide received the new 74-cid Shovelhead engine, replacing the elderly Panhead unit with more power and improved seals thanks to the 'Power Pac' alloy heads. Power was up to 60hp and noise levels were reduced, while the new Tillotson carburettor ensured smoother running. The '66 Electra-Glide is a classic Harley-Davidson all chrome, polished aluminium and usually loaded with options to create the ultimate touring machine. From the classy two-tone paintwork to the embossed Harley-Davidson logo on the tank, the Electra-Glide introduced a more civilized world. Dating from the first year of Shovelhead production, in which only 2,130 FL (low compression) and 5,625 FLH (high compression) examples were built, this machine is both rare and significant.
