The original and, many would argue, the best of the pony cars was the legendary Ford Mustang, a marketing triumph born in 1964 (as a 1965 model) and honed every successive year before being replaced for 1974 with the very different Mustang II. The final era of the first generation Mustang saw a longer, lower and generally larger body outline introduced for 1971, with European inspired styling, but three basic shapes - SportsRoof, Hardtop and Convertible - were offered. The Mustang had grown up, reflecting the trend in Detroit towards larger, more luxurious automobiles. The hottest Mustang option in 1973 was the Mach 1, a package available on the SportsRoof only and consisting of distinctive stripes on the sides, tail and bonnet, a blacked out grille plus the option of a NASA bonnet scoop and vinyl roof. The Mach 1 also came with high-back bucket seats, whitewall tyres and a competition suspension set-up for sharper handling. Although the Mach 1 pack was sold with a 302-cid V8 as standard, most buyers opted for the high performance 351-cid motor in either two or four-barrel carburettor form.
