Widely acknowledged as the greatest of all Aussie muscle cars, the Falcon XY GT was the culmination of a series of increasingly high performance Falcons begun with the XR GT of 1967. Brainchild of Bill Bourke, the original GT - though tame in comparison with later efforts - set the trend for sporting sedans that lives on in the hot Falcons of today. By the time the Falcon had evolved to the XY series of November 1970, the GT boasted a 351-cid V8 with a larger Autolite 600cfm four-barrel downdraught carby and 11.0:1 compression ratio to lift the power output to a massive 300bhp. Transmission was either a four-speed manual or automatic transmission, there were larger Kelsey Hayes disc brakes up front and stronger five-slot wheels completed the major revisions. Externally, the XY retained the matt black bonnet panels, grille and rear panel and Super Roo decals but a new functional bonnet scoop known as 'The Shaker' was introduced. One of the reasons for the legendary status enjoyed by the XY GT is the total dominance achieved on the track by the likes of Alan Moffat. In production for just two short years, the XY GT was built in limited numbers and as few as 757 were built in 1970 plus another 800 in 1971 (excluding Phase IIIs). The burgeoning market for muscle cars around the world has seen unprecedented demand for Falcon GTs pushing prices to record levels and there is little reason to see this abating in the near future.
