1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet Fastback (LHD)

To anyone familiar with Mustangs, and big block Mustangs in particular, the 428 Cobra Jet is a rare and extremely desirable option, transforming the original Pony Car into a seriously quick piece of machinery. Described as "the fastest running pure stock car in the history of man" by Hot Rod magazine, the 428 Cobra Jet was introduced on the 1st of April, 1968 and ran for three glorious years, providing Ford with real competition for the toughest muscle cars of the day. For 1970, the Mustang underwent a minor restyle, with single headlamps inside the grille and simulated air intakes at the front and a new rear end. Inside, a new steering wheel and high-back bucket seats were the big news. The Mach 1 remained a hugely popular edition of the fastback body style, with special ribbed aluminium rocker panels with distinctive script, the fake air scoops on the side panels deleted and black stripes on the bonnet and bootlid, along with new twist-on NASCAR hood pins. The 428-cid engine, dubbed Cobra Jet, was rated at 335bhp - a conservative figure that in all reality was more like 375 to 400bhp - and available with either the close-ratio four-speed manual transmission or Cruise-O-Matic automatic gearbox. According to Kevin Marti, there were 3,959 Mustangs built in 1970 with the 428 Cobra Jet engine and these are amongst the most sought after of all big-block Mustangs, combining bags of style with shattering performance.
