In production from 1968 until 1983, the third generation C3 Corvette Stingray drew inspiration from the Mako Shark II dream car and the pronounced ?Coke bottle? styling still draws admiring looks even today. Available in either T-top coupe or convertible form, the body style gradually evolved with a polyurethane body-coloured front bumper for 1973 and a matching tail section the following season. Improvements for the 1975 model years mainly took place under the skin, with a catalytic converter and High Energy ignition the big news. As usual, the 1975 Corvette was powered by the 350-cid V8 with a Rochester four-barrel Quadra-Jet carburettor and 165bhp on tap in standard trim, with the option of a high compression L82 engine developing 205bhp. Buyers had a choice of the four-speed manual transmission or Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission as a no-cost option. By the mid-1970s, the C3 Corvette had evolved into a nicely balanced, excellent driving machine and proved hugely popular, breaking new sales records and this in spite of the oil crisis. It was in 1975 that Zora Arkus-Duntov, the father of the Corvette, finally retired from General Motors, marking the end of an era.
