The final year of the first generation Ford Mustang was 1973, also significant as this was the last year a full convertible was offered for the next decade. Although based on the structure of the 1971-72 models, with their longer, lower and wider bodywork, the Mustang underwent some styling revisions for 1973 with a new grille and bumpers to meet stringent new safety standards, now colour-coded to the paintwork. Engine choices ranged from a 250-cid V6 through to the 302 and 351-cid V8s while more than 90 per cent of all 1973 models delivered were equipped with automatic transmission. New options included forged alloy wheels and steel-belted radial-ply tyres. With few convertibles left on the American market, the ragtop Mustang still sold reasonably well and came with a power-operated vinyl hood, knit-vinyl seat trim, courtesy lights under the dash and power front disc brakes as standard. The 1973 Mustang convertible is still a very appealing cruiser, with ample passenger space, plenty of luxurious amenities and - in 351-cid guise at least - enough performance to make driving a pleasure.
