Description
The third generation Corvette Stingray was introduced in 1968 with styling derived from the wicked Mako Shark II show car of 1965 and the aero 'coke-bottle' shape was clearly influenced by testing in GM's wind tunnel. By 1980, when the car on offer here was built, the Stingray badge had been dropped and the shapely bodywork revised several times with new deformable front and rear sections with integral spoilers at either end along with a wraparound rear window. The lightweight panels and aerodynamic styling helped improve fuel economy. Standard issue was the 350-cid (5.7-litre) V8 engine and four-speed manual gearbox though performance enthusiasts could select RPO L48 to raise power from 190bhp to 230bhp and the vast majority opted for the Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission. However, the emphasis remained firmly on luxury with air conditioning, power windows, telescopic steering wheel and an AM/FM radio part of the package that made America's only true sports car such great value.
