In February 1965 Holden replaced the EH with a stylishly modern new family car, christened the HD with so-called "Space-Curve" bodywork clearly influenced by Opel in Germany. Taking on Ford's new XP Falcon, the HD was both wider and longer than before, with lines featuring crisp edges and curved flanks along with an extended range of engines, the new Powerglide transmission and sundry other improvements. These included better brakes, now with auto adjustment, an alternator now standard and ?Improved Red Carpet Ride? for better suspension plus the addition of Girling disc brakes up front as an option from May 1965. The base 149-cid and mid-level 179-cid engines were joined by the more powerful X2 motor developing 140bhp, while trim levels ranged from the Standard and Special through to the more luxurious Premier. The HD/235 Premiers came with the larger 179-cid engine as standard, better seats, a central console storage box, front and rear armrests, improved heater/demister, Morrokide upholstery and additional trim and brightwork. Whitewall tyres and the optional vinyl roof also set the Premier apart. Setting new records right from the outset, the HD ultimately sold 178,927 units by the time it was phased out in April 1966 and remains an Aussie classic of the 1960s.
