The ultimate Torana to many Holden enthusiasts is the homologation special designated the A9X, a codename that evokes one of the greatest eras for fans of the General in touring car racing. Built in tiny numbers - just 404 were made between September and December 1977 - the A9X option was available on LX Torana in either SL/R 5000 sedan or SS hatchback form but was an entirely different beast to either of these road cars. The floor pan was unique, thanks to the Salisbury rear end and rear disc brakes while other changes included the steering gear that was bolted directly to the platform, a 3.08 diff (with the 2.6 optional), front spoiler with brake cooling ducts and a bonnet with a large reverse airscoop. Having homologated these parts with CAMS, Holden cleaned up on the track each year from 1977 through to 1979 before the A9X was retired upon the introduction of the Commodore in 1980. With Radial Tuned Suspension providing exemplary handling, disc brakes at either end giving superb stopping power and plenty of grunt from the high performance 5-litre V8 engine, the A9X was the ultimate performance Holden in the late 1970s and with the era of the Aussie muscle car now very much back in fashion, prices have begun to rise rapidly.
