As the successor to the legendary 246 Dino, Ferrari's 308 GTB upheld the best Maranello traditions with a beautiful styling, stunning performance and real charisma. Introduced in 1975, the new Ferrari employed a mid-mounted DOHC V8 engine displacing 3-litres and five-speed transaxle. The 308 came dressed in one of Pininfarina's finest creations, the perfectly rendered lines still as fresh today, three decades after being unveiled. In 1977 the 308 range was expanded to include a targa-roof model, the GTS, with a lift-out roof panel and Tom Selleck's character Magnum P.I. made the Ferrari famous around the world. Development of the 308 continued, with Bosch fuel injection replacing the original carburettors in 1980 to meet stringent new emission controls and low profile Michelin TRX tyres enhanced the already superb handling. The drop in power levels was addressed late in 1982 with the revised four-valves per cylinder (quattrovalvole) engine boosting power to 240bhp on European models, the injection intake box now finished in distinctive crackle paint. Some subtle exterior revisions were carried out at the same time, with a new front bumper, grille, external mirrors and the option of a rear spoiler mounted on the roof. The new Ferrari proved remarkably popular, with 3,042 examples of the 308 GTS Qv built before the model was replaced in 1985 by the 328 series and is an excellent way to experience the Prancing Horse marque.
