Mercedes-Benz launched a six-cylinder version of its popular 180 model in 1954 - the 220A- that in turn was replaced in 1956 by the 220S, sharing the same basic four-door bodyshell and 2195cc engine. The 220S featured twin carburettors, power-assisted brakes and could also be specified with semi-automatic transmission. Production of the 220S continued until 1959, with a total of 55,279 built.
