The Mini Cooper S was launched in April 1963 as a higher performance version of the standard Cooper on which it was based and production of the model fitted with a 1275cc version of BMC's venerable A-Series engine began in Sydney the following year.
The Mk II version with an all-synchromesh gearbox and numerous other refinements followed in 1968 and these models are sought after for their additional refinement over the Series I cars.
