Facing stiff competition from Chevrolet's new Camaro, the Mustang was restyled for 1967 with a longer, wider shape that nonetheless retained the same general styling themes as the original 1964 model. The radiator grille was enlarged and the rear panel made concave while underneath the front suspension was completely revised to improve ride and handling. The range of engines offered remained largely as per 1966, with the classic small-block 289-cid V8 remaining the most popular choice of performance-oriented buyers. Inside the '67 Mustang boasted a new dash with a host of new options. Once again, three different body shapes were sold, these being the hardtop coupe, the fastback coupe and the convertible. The open Mustang is both the rarest and most desirable variant, with just 43,599 rolling out of the Dearborn, San Jose or Metuchen's factories in 1967. With sexy styling, reliable mechanicals and no shortage of parts or specialists on hand to maintain them, the Mustang has undergone something of a renaissance in Australia in recent years and the convertible model is certainly the soundest of investments.
