The BMW 6-Series matured into an extremely capable grand tourer over the twelve years it remained in production. Launched in 1976 as the 630CS (with a carburettor engine) or the 633CSi (using Bosch fuel injection), the E24 6-Series range expanded two years later to include the classic 635CSi featuring a more powerful version of the silky smooth straight six. Most buyers opted for the ZF four-speed automatic transmission and there was plenty of interior space for four adults in the beautifully appointed interior. One outstanding feature of the 6-Series was the introduction of the check control system, a central panel of warning lights to monitor light bulbs, fluid levels and brake pads. Perhaps less overtly sporting than its predecessor, the 6-Series nonetheless enjoyed a long race career and the black and gold cars campaigned by Jim Richards in the Eighties remain a strong part of Australian Group A race history. Refined, elegant and discreetly luxurious, the 6-Series has aged well and remains a rewarding driving experience today.
