Description
Announced in 1962, the Norton Dominator 650SS was a road-going sports bike with excellent handling, performance levels on a par with the competition machinery yet full road equipment. The 650cc twin had been introduced in 1960 and for the Dominator was available in standard, De Luxe or SS trim and the latter proved more than a match for the Triumph Bonneville. The 650SS utilised the same Featherbed frame that had achieved great success on the track and this combined with the upgraded 49bhp engine, featuring twin carburettors, hotter camshaft, high compression pistons and downdraught head, made for an excellent all round package. The 650SS was available in one colour scheme only, black with a silver tank, and formed the basis for numerous privateer racers, winning the Thruxton 500-Mile race three years running.
