Description
The VL range of Harley-Davidsons lasted in production from 1930 until 1936 and featured the largest capacity Flathead V-twin engine available in this period, 74-cid at first then 80-cid in the final two years (on certain models), and the VLD was the high compression version of this unit. The VLD featured two-tone paintwork and a stylised fuel tank for the first time on a production Harley bike, marking a departure from the signature olive green of years gone by. Other changes on the VL range include a switch from the rounded fenders to the flatter curves on post-1934 bikes, while the toolbox was relocated from the front forks (below the headlight) to the frame on 1935-1936 models. The fork itself was the I-Beam Springer item while the original twin headlamp of the 1930 model was changed to the Motolamp (1931-1933) then to the Cycleray curved lens unit (post-1934 models). The VLD is a classic Thirties Harley Flathead, with plenty of grunt and tremendous style and remains popular with H-D collectors today.
