Ford revamped the Mustang in 1967 in response to a new generation of Ponycars like Chevrolet's Camaro, Pontiac's Firebird and the Mercury Cougar. Longer, wider and with substantially more room inside, the new Mustang's styling was evolutionary rather than revolutionary - as the original Mustang had been such an incredible hit, Ford had little reason to change the winning formula. The interior was one area that did come in for some reworking, with redesigned bucket seats, a sports steering wheel and loop-pile carpeting all standard equipment. Dual hydraulic brakes and revamped front suspension were the only other significant changes under the skin. For 1968, Ford made even fewer changes - the side coves lost the simulated side scoops and by removing the horizontal bars, the designers gave the pony emblem the appearance of floating in the grille. Engine options ranged from mild - in the form of the base 220-cid six - through to wild, with two new big-blocks displacing either 390-cid or 428-cid. Mid-season, the stalwart 289-cid small-block gave way to the new 302-cid motor with either two or four-barrel carburettors. Production for 1968 totalled 317,414 and the model became instantly famous when Steve McQueen drove his Highland Green GT390 around the streets of San Francisco in the cult movie "Bullitt".
