In the early post-war era of Australian motoring, the big three American corporations - namely Ford, General Motors and Chrysler - were represented in our market with export models built in Canada that often differed quite markedly from their American counterparts. Chrysler's Canadian arm built modified Plymouths, badged as Dodges and sometimes referred to as ?Plodges?, comprising a mixture of styling elements and running gear from both brands. Known as the Dodge Kingsway, this particular car was powered by the ubiquitous flathead six, displacing some 218-cid and developing 97hp at 3600rpm and with a lowered compression ratio of 6.7:1 for export markets. The 1949 Dodge/Plymouth saw the first major restyle since the end of the war, with a longer wheelbase and boxier, simpler shape that gave more interior space and the Kingsway was a combination of the Plymouth body with Dodge front clip and badges. The Australian market was dominated by Ford and General Motors and as a result relatively few Dodge Kingsways were sold here, making this not only a very appealing and affordable American classic but a rare one too.
