The Model A, introduced in late 1927 as a 1928 model, was something of a milestone car in the history of the Blue Oval, successfully replacing the much loved Tin Lizzie. Almost everything on the Model A was new, from the L-head four-cylinder engine to the 103.5-inch wheelbase chassis. With 40 hp on tap, the Model A delivered more than double the output of the Model T's motor, while the ride was vastly improved thanks to redesigned front and rear axles and hydraulic shock absorbers. Four-wheel mechanical brakes were standard equipment and all things considered, the Ford was remarkably painless to drive by the standards of the day. The Model A was available with a vast array of body types, ranging from open tourers through to deluxe sedans. The tourer was a popular choice when new and remains sought after today by those who prefer open top motoring, the extra seats meaning the car can be enjoyed by friends and family alike. Ford made constant changes to the Model A over the life of the car, with the 1930 models benefiting from wider, lower wings and raised bonnet line, with stainless steel used on the radiator shell and headlights. New balloon tyres were fitted to smaller 19-inch rims and the steering ratio increased in order to reduce effort, making the Model A more relaxing to drive. By 1930, Ford had pulled ahead of Chevrolet in the sales race, such was the Model A's widespread appeal, and it was being exported all over the world, with Australian cars sourced from Ford's Canadian arm.
