1970 Pontiac GTO 400ci. Coupe (LHD)

Pontiac launched the legendary GTO in 1964 and to many people this was the first real muscle car. The combination of an intermediate, or mid-size, car fitted with a big-block V8 began as an option on the Tempest Le Mans range of coupes, convertibles or hardtops in October 1963. The second generation GTO appeared in 1968, with more curvaceous styling and shorter (2800mm) wheelbase. Distinctive features of the new bodywork included the adoption of colour-keyed energy absorbing bumpers, a prominent split grille and - a first for an American car - windscreen wipers hidden below the trailing edge of the bonnet. For 1970, there were more styling revisions to the front and rear, a stiffer front anti-roll bar and for the first time, one at the rear as well. Optional variable-lock power steering was another innovation introduced on the GTO in 1970. Powertrain choices included the base 400-cid V-8 (with Ram Air III and IV optional) along with the new long-stroke 455-cid V-8. In total some 40,149 GTOs were built in 1970, the falling sales reflecting the general trend away from muscle cars. Ferrari may have invented the Gran Turismo Omologato but it was Pontiac who brought power to the people with their muscular namesake.
