Ford's Mustang was an instant classic, pioneering a completely new market segment - the personal sports coupe - that even took its name from the model, while the other car makers like GM and Chrysler rushed to build their own 'Ponycars'. Based on the Falcon platform, Lee Iacocca's team created a car that was both stylish and sporty and, more importantly, could be tailored to the owner's individual taste and specifications through an extensive options list. Thus, Mustangs ranged from the mild - with six-cylinder engines and automatic transmissions - through to wild, with a powerful V8 motor and manual shifter and were equally at home doing the shopping or tearing up the dragstrip. In addition to the original coupe, Ford offered a convertible version that was popular in sunnier climates like California and Florida and these remain sought after today. In 1965, a basic Convertible Mustang would set you back $2,557.64 and around 73,000 were made. Ownership of any classic Mustang remains as rewarding an experience now as it was back in the Sixties, and demand for good examples will always be strong.
