By 1978, Ford's legendary F-series was the best selling truck in North America and just ten years later, had become the number one selling vehicle - of any kind - in the country. The pick-up truck had, by the 1990s, evolved a long way from the crude load-carriers of earlier generations and top-of-the-line models now rivalled luxury cars in terms of equipment levels. Although the F150 would never be described as a sophisticated vehicle - it's primary purpose has always been that of a workhorse - Ford did add safety features like anti-lock brakes in 1987. Powering the trucks were a wide range of six or V8 engines, a choice of four-speed automatic or five-speed manual gearboxes and two or four-wheel drive. For 1994, the same basic styling and platform that had served the F150 since the 1980s was still in evidence, although the front end now had a more aero appearance, but some useful safety features were added, including driver's side airbags on all models, along with side impact protection. With the optional 351-cid Multi-port EFI V-8 under the bonnet, the F150 was not short on grunt and the buyer could specify a limited-slip diff if required. The trim levels included the XL and more luxurious XLT and the F150 came in no less than four different wheelbase lengths, the two larger ones both being Supercabs.
