1968 Holden HK Monaro GTS 307 Coupe

The HK represented a big step forward for Holden when launched in 1968, being longer, wider and more roomy than the outgoing HD/HR models, while the option of V8 power for the first time made headline news. In July 1968, the model range was expanded to include a new hero car in the form of a stylish fastback coupe known as the Monaro - a name that has gone on to become a legend in Australia's motoring history. Not surprisingly, Holden soon capitalised on the marketing potential of racing the new Monaro and it scored a triumphant win at Bathurst in 1968 in the hands of privateer Bruce McPhee, filling second and third places as well. The Chevrolet-sourced V8s were available in either 307-cid (5-litre) or 327-cid (5.4-litre) guise and the former was normally equipped with Powerglide automatic transmission. The 307-cid engine had a compression ratio of 8.75:1, breathed through a Rochester 2-jet carburettor and developed 210 bhp. Inside, the GTS Monaros boasted full instrumentation, with a console-mounted tacho and wood-rim sports steering wheel. Externally, the GTS package consisted of black stripes running the full length of the car and along the sills, with unique badges. These early Monaros, particularly the GTS models with V8 power, are now highly prized by collectors and as the first in a long line of legendary Aussie muscle cars, will continue to appreciate in value.
