The year 1999 is significant in Mustang terms as the 35th anniversary of this legendary model and Ford gave the Fox platform a birthday makeover, extensively restyling the bodywork with a harder-edged look resulting in tauter, more sculpted lines. Underneath, the Mustang was reworked with the option of ABS and Traction Control available for the first time while the fuel-injected 4.6-litre V8 now developed substantially more power (260 bhp at 5250 rpm) thanks to a higher-lift camshaft, coil-on-plug ignition, larger valves and a revised intake manifold. Little change was made for 2000 aside from the removal of the 35th Anniversary badges and 2001 saw both the return of the Cobra to the Mustang line-up and the popular "Bullitt" special edition with Highland Green paint and retro-styled wheels. In 2002, the Mach 1000 audio system was an option, Sonic Blue was added as a new exterior colour and base models now had 16-inch wheels as standard. The 2002 4.6-litre V8 Mustang could reach 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds and dispatch the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds. In total there were 24,747 regular convertibles and a further 17,717 GT convertibles built in 2002 and it was possible to purchase a converted right-hand drive Mustang from Ford dealers in Australia between 2001-2003. The Mustang had, by this time, evolved into a modern, high sports car capable of delivering all the scintillating performance and driver excitement of the original Mustang combined with luxuries and refinement never imagined by the Sixties driver.
