The MGF was the first all-new proper sports car to wear the famous octagon badges since the demise of the beloved MGB around fifteen years previously, various badge-engineered Rovers notwithstanding. After a long and at times difficult gestation, Project Phoenix was launched at Geneva in 1995 to a great reception. The two-seater boasted a mid-mounted 1.8-litre engine with optional VVC (Variable Valve Control cylinder head) technology, five-speed gearbox, excellent brakes and good roadholding. It would seem MG had finally recaptured the spirit of the marque by offering an affordable, attractive and credible performer to the buying public once again and were rewarded with solid sales and rave reviews from the motoring press - Car magazine in the UK rated the newcomer higher than either the BMW Z3 and Alfa Romeo Spider. The MGF Cup one-make race series further enhanced the sporting nature of the model and a few Limited Edition models were sold over the years, including the Abingdon Edition model offered here. All were painted Brooklands Green with contrasting Walnut leather, traditional wood veneer on the console and fascia along with special wood/alloy gearknob. Other changes included unique 16-inch alloy wheels on Goodyear 215/40-R16 tyres and Walnut tonneau cover.
