Description
With the switch from Group C to the international Group A regulations it was necessary for Holden to de-stroke their V8 engine from 5044cc to 4979cc and produce no less than 500 examples in order for it to become eligible to race in the new category. Based on the VK Commodore, the Group A SS introduced in March 1985 was extremely potent with 196 kW, the Group 3 suspension package, limited-slip diff and 16-inch HDT alloy wheels running on Bridgestone Potenza 225/50VR-16 rubber. An aggressive body kit consisted of a front air-dam, modified front grille plus a boot lid rear spoiler and all 500 were finished in Formula Blue livery. The interior was also upgraded with a Momo steering wheel; Scheel sports seats and a host of other minor changes. The VK Group A SS was the fastest production Holden to date, one magazine recording a 0-100 km/h time of just 6.98 seconds, whilst on the track Holden's hero Peter Brock surprised everyone by teaming up with arch rival Alan Moffatt in the 1986 Mobil-HDT race team.
