Description
Sculptured by Robert Opron, the futuristic SM was launched at the Geneva Salon in 1970, after Citroen took a controlling interest in Maserati in the late 60's. A tear-drop design with a wide front and a tapered fastback ensured sleek aerodynamics. It combined the power and verve of the 2.7-litre (later 3.0-litre) V6 quad cam Maserati engine with the svelte hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension from Citroen. A supercar was born. The sensational SM immediately became one of the most hotly desired cars of all time. It set new standards for refinement, comfort and driveability with a remarkable top speed of 140 mph. The SM was the world's fastest front-wheel drive car for more than a decade. The interior complemented the radical exterior with its single spoke steering wheel and exceptionally low centre of gravity. Only 12,920 units were built by 1975. As a result, the Citroen SM remains one of the most highly collectable cars of all time.
