Description
Introduced at the 1972 Turin Motor Show, the De Tomaso Longchamp was based on the Deauville model, using a shortened Deauville wheelbase. Built to rival Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, these two models were the only front-engined production cars made by De Tomaso.
Italian coachbuilder Ghia designed the Longchamp with a long bonnet to accommodate the 351-cid Ford Cleveland V8, which with an output of 330hp and mated to a 3-speed Ford C-6 Cruise-o-Matic gave the car a top speed of 240km/h with spirited acceleration to match.
The suspension was independent front and rear with coil spring and wishbone suspension; steering was power assisted rack and pinion with vented disc brakes all around, inboard at the rear. The interior of the car was luxurious and it was almost fully covered with leather.
A total of 419 Longchamps were built (395 coupes and 14 Spiders) until 1989, with only a couple per year built during the last years.
