1971 Holden HG Brougham 308 Sedan

Description

Holden introduced the HK range in 1968 with all-new bodywork that was both longer and wider and offered a great deal more interior room. The model line-up was overhauled, with the base model Belmont joined by the Kingswood and upmarket Premier while two new models were added in July 1968 - the Monaro sports coupe and the luxury Brougham. Pitched squarely at Ford's Fairlane, the flagship Brougham had unique styling touches to differentiate it from lesser Holdens and came initially with the 307-cid Chevrolet-sourced V8 and Powerglide transmission as standard. At the HT's 1969 release the Brougham was the first to receive the General's locally-built 308ci motor, months before it was rolled out to the rest of the range. Further refinement came with the HG series as the Brougham received as standard a three-speed auto to replace the ageing two-speed Powerglide. It carried offer luxury items such as power front disc brakes and power steering, while inside the Brougham boasted Brocade upholstery, a heater/demister unit, vinyl roof and quality carpeting. Despite the high specification and very good performance, Ford's Fairlane continued to outsell the Brougham so with the announcement of the HQ platform the name was dropped to make way for the more imposing Statesman.
