Description
Designed to replace the iconic Pagoda-roof series SLs, the 350 SL was larger, heavier and more luxurious as it was modernised with an eye for the US market. Introduced in 1971 with the model code R107, it sported a 3.5 litre, fuel injected V8 matched to a 4-speed manual transmission, though the optional 4-speed auto was the more popular choice. Under the skin it featured an adaptation of the contemporary 200 saloon suspension layout that utilised coil springs, thus doing away with the notorious swing-axle setup found in previous generation SLs . Today early 3.5 litre cars, particularly in manual form, are seen as the rare and desirable from the R107 body-style; the later 4.5 litre engine being less sporty due to ever-increasing emissions controls.
