The FJ series Holdens replaced the popular yet ageing FX in October 1953. Detail changes to the front end metal and chrome brought the FJ a hint of elegance, while improvements to the equipment levels (including window winders on the 'Special' spec) brought modernity, though it shared the outgoing model's mechanical package. Alongside the FJ Sedan and Utility variants sat a new model, the Panel Van, a first for the Holden line and designed to appeal to workmen who required a covered storage space without wanting the inconveniences of a truck. The FJ Panel Van fathered a dynasty in Australia which culminated in the seventies and the Sandman Holdens that appealed to young sun-chasers and tradesmen alike.
