Description
The W116-series Mercedes was introduced in late 1972 and continued production until 1980. Though previous Mercedes had been adorned with the 'S' badge, it was with the W116 that Mercedes first recognised these cars as 'S-Class', the S standing for Sonderklasse, or 'Special' in English.Initially released with carburettor-fed 2.8 litre six (for models 280S, 280SE and long-wheelbase 280SEL) or a choice of 3.5 (350SE and SEL) or 4.5 litre (450SE and SEL) V8s, by 1975 an across the class upgrade saw the introduction of Bosch fuel injection which improved economy and emissions but reduced power. 1975 also saw the gargantuan 6.9 litre V8 introduced to the 450SEL body, making for a true executive dragster experience. By 1980 almost half a million W116 had been produced.
