The BSA B.40 bikes were the British staple's mid-range bike of the Sixties. Derived from the earlier 250cc C.15 released in 1958, the 350cc B.40 was introduced as a response to the rapid engineering advancements of the Japanese bikes which had started flooding into Europe in the early Sixties. Post-war BSA was struggling to contain costs, so the earlier gearbox and clutch were retained with the larger motor, and existing chassis and braking systems were also adapted. Ever-popular with the military, the B.40 was adopted by several Armys, as it was a relatively simple, basic bike that could be easily riden and maintained. These contracts assisted in getting BSA through the decade and into the Seventies.
