By mating the front-end of the smaller 'Sportster' bikes with the chassis and mechanicals of their larger machines, Harley produced the Super Glide FX range. Though bike enthusiasts had been mixing and matching components for years, this series was seen as the first 'factory' custom combination. Introduced in 1970 by designer Willie G. Davidson, the Super Glide was very popular, and in 1982 when the FXR Super Glide II was introduced the FX was still available, production running concurrently. One key variant was the FXE, which brought with it electric starting in 1974, making for a more useable bike.
